Trump Calls on Other Nations to Help Secure Freedom of Navigation in Strait of Hormuz, Complains About Lack of Allied Support
On March 16th, local time, U.S. President Trump once again called on other countries to assist in ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz during an event at the White House, and complained that some allies are not enthusiastic about supporting the United States.
Trump stated, “Some countries are very proactive, while others are not so much. Some of these countries we have been helping for years and even protecting from terrible external threats, but their enthusiasm is not high.”
According to Trump, some countries are willing to help, but he did not specify which ones.
Trump also said that it is currently unclear whether Iran has started laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military has sunk more than 100 Iranian naval vessels, including all 30 of Iran’s mine-laying ships.
Currently, several U.S. allies have stated that they do not have plans to immediately send warships to the Strait of Hormuz. Countries like Germany, Spain, and Italy have ruled out participation in any Gulf region operations. The UK and Denmark said they would consider possible assistance but emphasized the need to de-escalate the situation and avoid being drawn into war. France indicated that it might provide help.
