YouTube is rolling out its AI similarity detection tool (initially launched for creators last year) to pilot groups such as government officials, political candidates, and journalists. The tool can identify deepfake videos generated by AI, and eligible users can view matching results and request the removal of unauthorized content that violates policies. However, all requests will be evaluated based on guidelines that protect parody and commentary. YouTube's goal is to balance free speech and the risks of AI impersonation in the public sphere, and to advocate for federal protections such as the NO FAKES Act.
