Tourists hit a horse in Neuquén and fled without taking responsibility

A Friday afternoon on the access road to Zapala, Neuquén, ended in tragedy when a vehicle from Chile ran over a horse walking along the road. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in front of the iconic Malvinas Soldier Monument. Most seriously: the occupants of the pickup truck disappeared from the scene without fulfilling their legal obligations or providing assistance.

The violent crash and the disappearance of those responsible

The impact was so severe that the foal died instantly, a victim of the frontal collision. Eyewitnesses described the truck as a vehicle with a Chilean license plate that hit the animal with considerable force. When Neuquén Police traffic division personnel arrived after being alerted by other drivers, they only found the horse’s body abandoned by the roadside. The responsible drivers had already fled without filing a report or identifying themselves.

Sub-commissioner Julio Soto explained that the travelers probably continued on their way because the vehicle showed no visible damage that would impair its driving. “The occupants never approached to report what happened, and neither did the owners of the animal,” the officer noted. This evasive behavior violates legal provisions that establish obligations in the event of traffic accidents.

Emergency operation to clear the road

Zapala’s municipality had to intervene with heavy machinery to remove the horse’s body from the road. At the same time, police managed the vehicle traffic, which was blocked for several hours. The animal lacked identifiable marks that could help locate its owners, complicating both the investigation and potential legal sanctions for neglecting animal care.

The presence of other loose horses in the high-traffic area posed an additional danger to drivers at that time, highlighting the lack of control over livestock in urban zones.

A concerning trend on Neuquén roads

This is not an isolated case in the region. Just five months ago, a similar accident occurred on Provincial Route 17 near Picún Leufú, when a vehicle hit another loose horse, resulting in severe damage to the vehicle and injuries to its occupants. The recurrence of these incidents underscores the urgent need for more effective prevention mechanisms and better control over animals on public roads.

The case also raises questions about the civil responsibility of drivers. Although the vehicle did not suffer serious damage, fleeing the scene is a punishable act that worsens the legal situation for those who ran over the animal without reporting to authorities.
