Mirny – The Capital of Russian Diamonds
In Yakutia, at the heart of Siberian permafrost, stands Mirny, a city born from an exceptional mineral discovery. This iconic locality in northeastern Russia owes its existence to the exploitation of underground riches that have shaped its history and continue to define its identity. Since 1955, when one of the world’s largest diamond deposits was identified, Mirny has become much more than a simple mining town.
Mirny: The Rise of a Mining City in 1955
The discovery of the kimberlite pipe “Mir” transformed the Arctic landscape. It was on the frozen lands of Yakutia that geologists identified this remarkable geological formation, opening the door to a new era of mining in Russia. Mirny was built around these underground riches, attracting thousands of workers and entrepreneurs eager to try their luck in the north. The city quickly prospered, becoming a major center of the Soviet diamond industry.
A Historic Treasure: The 1980 Diamond
December 23, 1980, will be etched into the annals of Russian mining history. On this date, the largest diamond ever discovered in Russia was extracted from the “Mir” mine: a specimen weighing 342.5 carats, over 68 grams. This gemstone was given a symbolic name – “XXVI Congress of the CPSU” – in honor of the major political event of the time. This extraordinary find remains a testament to the geological wealth hidden in Mirny.
Yakut Legend and Hidden Riches
The indigenous culture of the region preserves a beautiful legend passed down through generations: that of a God flying over the icy lands of Yakutia who, struck by the extreme cold, dropped a bag containing the most beautiful jewels of creation. According to this mythic story, the diamonds scattered across the mountains and forests, explaining the mineral abundance of the territory. This poetic tale reflects the fascination that the region has always held for its inhabitants.
A Geological Wonder of Global Scale
The “Mir” mine near Mirny is one of the most spectacular excavations on the Earth’s surface. With a staggering depth of 515 meters and an impressive diameter of 1,200 meters, this artificial crater ranks among the largest ever created by human activity. Visitors and tourists eager for extraordinary discoveries can admire this surreal landscape from designated viewpoints—an rare and unforgettable experience. Mirny remains a unique destination where natural wonders meet modern engineering.
