Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF Outflows Signal Institutional Pullback Amid Rising BTC Dominance

The institutional appetite for crypto assets has noticeably cooled, with spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF flows telling a cautionary tale. Analytics data from Glassnode reveals that the 30-day moving average for net inflows across both BTC and ETH ETFs has remained underwater since early November, marking a sustained period of institutional retreat from these products.

The numbers paint a stark picture. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs are locked in a four-day outflow cycle, with investors pulling $188.6 million in the most recent trading session alone. While BlackRock’s IBIT showed pockets of buying activity on December 18 and 22, the broader trend remains decidedly negative. This inconsistency suggests institutional investors are taking a cautious, selective approach rather than exhibiting conviction.

Ethereum hasn’t fared better, with ETF outflows of $95.5 million recorded on December 23, despite a brief inflow window earlier in the week. The volatility in weekly flows underscores institutional hesitation across the entire ETF landscape.

What’s driving the pullback? Rising Bitcoin dominance has seemingly redirected institutional capital toward BTC-specific positioning, leaving ETH on the sidelines. As BTC dominance strengthens, the narrative shifts—institutions may be consolidating positions around the primary asset rather than diversifying into altcoins, even Ethereum. This selective allocation reflects a more risk-conscious stance ahead of potential regulatory shifts and macroeconomic headwinds.

The combination of sustained outflows and elevated BTC dominance suggests institutional investors are entering a consolidation phase, waiting on the sidelines for clearer market signals before committing fresh capital.
