How Mr. Beast Turned Video Content into a Multi-Billion Dollar Business
Who is the top earner on YouTube? Over the past two years, this status has been confidently held by American videoblogger Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast. His financial figures are impressive: in 2021, he earned approximately $54 million, and forecasts for 2022 predicted growth up to $110 million. Forbes estimates his personal wealth at $500 million. Notably, in 2022, Donaldson sought investors to increase his stake in his media empire — with a successful deal, the value of his content studio could reach $1.5 billion.
From a Single Channel to a Content Ecosystem
MrBeast’s success is built on the principle of diversification. Instead of betting on one channel, he created an entire network of projects on YouTube. The main channel, MrBeast, has 142 million subscribers, but this is just the beginning. His portfolio includes: Beast Reacts ( 22.5 million ), MrBeast Gaming ( 32 million ), Beast Philanthropy ( 12.6 million ), MrBeast Shorts ( 21.5 million ), and MrBeast 2 ( 21.5 million ). This approach allows him to reach various audiences and monetize content across multiple channels simultaneously.
All production is concentrated in Greenville — the place where Donaldson grew up. The main studio is located there, and it is being systematically expanded to three major production centers. About 50 professionals work behind the scenes: screenwriters, video editors, assistants, and managers. Many of them are long-time friends and relatives of the blogger, involved in his projects from the very beginning. Donaldson plans to turn Greenville into an attractive hub for other content creators, encouraging them to open their own studios there.
Restaurant Empire: Virtual Format as a Key to Scaling
In December 2020, MrBeast decided to make a mark in the catering industry by launching MrBeast Burger. He rented a small takeout eatery in Greenville and conducted an experiment: offering free food for pickup from a menu of burgers, fries, desserts, and drinks. The result exceeded expectations — on opening day, a 30 km long car queue formed.
Today, the network has over 300 locations across the US and several abroad. Such explosive growth was made possible by an innovative model: MrBeast Burger operates as a virtual restaurant, functioning only through a mobile app. Orders are prepared in independent offline cafes with which the company has entered into partnership agreements. In the first three months after launch, the brand sold over a million burgers. In August 2022, Donaldson also opened his first full-fledged physical restaurant.
Expansion into the Food Industry through Feastables
A logical continuation of the expansion was the creation of the Feastables brand — a line of snacks including MrBeast Bar chocolate and MrBeast Cookies. The products are sold both online and on the shelves of Walmart supermarkets.
The launch in January 2022 was accompanied by a large marketing campaign. MrBeast organized a cash prize giveaway and held a contest for holders of ten golden tickets hidden inside chocolate packaging. The final stage was dramatic: participants prepared desserts under the evaluation of the famous British chef Gordon Ramsay, and the winner achieved a dream — a chocolate factory inspired by Willy Wonka’s universe. According to Business Insider, in the first few months, Feastables generated over $10 million in revenue.
Philosophy of Success
Donaldson himself explains his achievements philosophically: “The chances of becoming a billionaire increase when you don’t focus solely on that goal. You just need to concentrate on building a really cool company.” His trajectory — from a videoblogger to the head of a multi-billion empire — is so impressive that Harvard Business School has invited him to share his experience with students. MrBeast’s example shows how, in the digital age, one content creator can build a diverse portfolio of assets spanning entertainment, gastronomy, and retail.
