Professor Wang Liqun's Wake-up Call: Unveiling the Truth of Human Nature, Healing a Confused Life. Each sentence contains profound life wisdom, sent to you and me who are striving forward. Understanding it can help you avoid many detours.
Selfishness Deep in the Bones Is True Human Nature
Before getting on the bus, everyone hopes for equal opportunities, not to close the door early so I can squeeze in. Once on the bus, seeing the crowd at the door, I hope the door closes sooner and the bus departs earlier so I can arrive sooner—that is human nature! We criticize monopolies, yet rush into high-paying jobs; we mock corruption, yet busy ourselves with connections. In short, anger isn’t because of unfairness, but because we feel disadvantaged in an unfair situation. We don’t want to eliminate unfairness; we want to position ourselves advantageously within it. This innate selfishness is true human nature.
Truly Caring People Are Very Few
Actually, in life, everyone should remember that very few people truly care about you. Many only look at the results, not the reasons. So don’t expect others to care about you sincerely, even those close to you. No one cares about what you’ve been through, how many sleepless nights you’ve endured, how many times you’ve fallen, or how often you’ve struggled to get back up. Others only see the outcome. They see you change allegiances three or six times, but they don’t see the real reasons behind your changes. Therefore, there is no true empathy in this world—only self-awareness. We must learn to understand others, to understand, and to avoid complaints. This is a weakness of human nature: focusing only on the results, ignoring the process.
Always Stay Away from Offended People
Always stay away from those you have offended, or you will face endless troubles. Once adults make enemies, it’s very hard to resolve. The saying “a smile can resolve a thousand worries” is just nonsense. If given the chance, they will put you in a deadly situation. Forget those you have offended; it’s like placing yourself under someone else’s sword. Perhaps they were forced by circumstances or reasons, appearing harmless and always smiling at you. You think they’ve forgotten, but that thorn is still in their heart. When they find an opportunity, they will humiliate or retaliate against you—no one is exempt. There’s no such thing as a broken mirror restored or old grievances forgotten.
Clear Understanding of Social Etiquette
If you want to associate with a powerful person, you must be willing to give. How can you build a relationship with a powerful person just by inviting them for a meal? If you want to connect with someone influential but don’t want to give your best part, how can you do it? Ordinary people shouldn’t think about climbing the social ladder because all circles are evenly matched. The essence of socializing is value exchange. One-sided upward moves are just sycophancy, and they won’t look up to you. So don’t expect to easily make connections with the powerful. Don’t think about upward socializing; if you lack ability, knowing anyone is useless. Focus on being yourself and connecting with like-minded people—that’s the wise way of socializing.
The Heaven’s Way Avoids Excess, Humanity Avoids Perfection
It’s very difficult to achieve fame and fortune at the same time in life. Fame doesn’t necessarily bring benefits, and benefits don’t always bring good reputation. It’s hard to have both fame and fortune. Some have poor marriages but excellent children; some have great marriages but poor health; some have smooth careers but family discord; others have harmonious families but live in poverty. So, never be too greedy—having one or two of wealth, health, longevity, and happiness is enough. Most people don’t understand that wanting everything results in nothing. Having a wife but no love, children but unfilial, blessings but uncontent, longevity but poverty—these are common. The heaven’s way avoids excess; human nature avoids perfection. Sometimes, pursuing less may seem passive, but it contains great wisdom.
Continuous Learning and Resource Accumulation
There are two great sorrows in life: one, no longer falling in love after marriage; two, no longer learning after graduation. Learning is not just a school matter; it’s an essential lifelong pursuit. Many great figures share one trait: lifelong learning. It’s a way of life, like eating and sleeping—indispensable, not for any specific purpose, but because it’s an important part of life. Many people lament that society develops too fast, but it’s not society that’s too fast; it’s our reaction time that’s too slow. Learning is about accumulating resources. Only when you have enough resources can you judge the future. The ancients said: “If you are poor, don’t stop learning; if you are rich, don’t stop learning.” So, whether you are poor or wealthy now, you must keep learning.
