OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman's ex-boyfriend was robbed in a home invasion, resulting in a loss of $11 million in cryptocurrency assets.
On November 26, according to sources from the police and informed individuals who spoke to the New York Post, a tech investor who previously dated OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman was the victim of an armed robbery at their residence in San Francisco last Saturday night, resulting in a loss of $11 million in crypto assets.
Surveillance video shows that the suspect, holding a white package, disguised themselves as a delivery person and rang the doorbell of the $4.4 million residence. When the suspect falsely claimed to be "Joshua" delivering a package and identified as a UPS partner employee, the victim opened the door and confirmed that they were indeed Joshua. After pretending to ask for a signature and borrowing a pen, the suspect followed the resident inside, and a loud noise immediately ensued.
According to police reports, the suspect held the victim at gunpoint indoors, bound them with tape, emptied their crypto accounts, and stole their mobile phone and computer. When the police arrived at 6:45 PM that evening, they found multiple bruises on the victim's body. Sources close to the investigation revealed that the gunman stole $11 million worth of Ethereum and Bitcoin, believed to be a targeted attack by an organized crime group.
According to insiders, the suspect tortured the victim after binding them, beating them while on a hands-free call, with a foreign accent on the other end continually disclosing the victim's personal information. The robbers subsequently emptied all of their cryptocurrency wallets within approximately 90 minutes.
It is reported that 31-year-old homeowner Lachy Groom is a venture capitalist and the former boyfriend of 40-year-old Sam Altman. Property records show he purchased the house from the Altman brothers for $1.8 million in 2021. $ETH
