Ripple's Enigmatic Co-founder Breaks 14-Year Silence

Arthur Britto, the elusive co-architect of the XRP Ledger and Ripple Labs co-founder, has made his first public communication on social media after 14 years of silence. Known for his secrecy and absence from public life, Britto’s single emoji post on X late Monday sparked an 8% increase in XRP’s value within a 24-hour period.

Britto’s X account, created in August 2011, shared a lone “face without mouth” emoji. Despite the cryptic nature of the post, the XRP community’s response was swift, largely due to Britto’s status as a founder who has shunned the limelight since Ripple’s inception.

David Schwartz, Ripple’s chief technology officer and fellow XRP Ledger co-creator, confirmed the authenticity of the message, stating, “It was not a hack or compromise.”

The Phantom XRPL Co-creator Emerges

Little is known about Arthur Britto. According to Schwartz, Britto co-developed the XRP Ledger in 2012 alongside Jed McCaleb, who is also recognized for establishing Mt. Gox and subsequently, the Stellar blockchain. Their collaboration led to the creation of what was initially called NewCoin, later rebranded as OpenCoin, and ultimately became Ripple Labs.

In 2015, Britto filed a lawsuit against McCaleb, alleging breach of contract for launching Stellar and purportedly copying Ripple’s code. The dispute was reportedly settled out of court, with the full terms remaining undisclosed.

Despite his pivotal role in developing XRPL, Britto has maintained an almost complete invisibility. He has never granted a public interview, appeared at a public event, or allowed verified photographs of himself to circulate.

While his name appears in public records and legal documents, Britto’s persona has been more legend than reality beyond official paperwork.

The XRP co-founder is also noted as the founder and president of PolySign, a blockchain infrastructure company. He briefly held a director position at Gate in 2014, which concluded in 2015.

Real, Yet as Private as Satoshi

Britto’s extreme privacy has fueled theories that he might be a pseudonym or even a fictional entity. Some speculate that he could be the person behind crypto’s most famous pseudonym, Bitcoin’s creator Satoshi Nakamoto.

A Reddit user commented, “His privacy is so intense that he’s one of my dark horse candidates for being Satoshi.”

In November 2023, David Schwartz addressed these rumors, confirming Britto’s existence while emphasizing the developer’s strong commitment to privacy.

“He is a distinct individual in his own right. However, he values his privacy intensely,” Schwartz stated, dispelling notions that Britto is merely a phantom within Ripple’s operations.

Further evidence of Britto’s identity emerged in a Ripple community post shared on X earlier this month. The post revealed a 2012 agreement signed by Chris Larsen, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto.

The document, dated September 17, allocated 2% of all XRP (then called “Ripple Credits”) to Britto and granted him perpetual rights to build on the Ripple protocol without requiring future authorization. Schwartz verified the document’s authenticity and mentioned ongoing communication with Britto.

XRP Price Surge Amid Community Excitement

Following a brief dip to an intraday low of $1.97 shortly after Britto’s emoji post, XRP has experienced an 8.1% increase over the past day. Many traders interpreted the cryptic post as a bullish indicator.

XRP enthusiast John Squire remarked, “Is this the start of a bull run? It’s too early to say definitively. But Arthur Britto doesn’t casually leave hints. When someone this reclusive communicates… it’s worth paying attention. In the crypto world, silence can be more impactful than noise. And Britto just broke his. Stay vigilant. Something significant may be on the horizon.”
