Understanding the Basics of Blockchain Domains

In simple terms, a domain or domain name is typically a website’s name. However, this isn’t always the case. In this article, we’ll explore the concept using the “.ton” domain zone as an example, although there are other domain zones operating on different blockchains (such as “.sui”) that function similarly.

Your domain in the “.ton” network is a name you choose that can be “linked” to your crypto wallet, website, or even a smart contract.

The Value of Blockchain Domains

The essence of a domain is that it’s human-readable and user-friendly, especially when compared to a wallet address (Example address: EQDZ3FVcaCjwbL4IEtfnWPokJilaPUdqzHNwv1_GUV_U-Pt0). A significant advantage of TON domains is that the owner receives an NFT, which serves as proof of ownership and control.

As a result, almost no one can block your domain (partly thanks to decentralization). There’s no central administrator in the “.ton” domain zone, unlike traditional domains such as “.com” or “.org”. For exceptional cases, there is a mechanism to change ownership or remove a domain through network-wide voting, but this requires extremely compelling reasons.

Domain Maintenance Requirements

An important detail to know before purchasing a domain is that the owner must send at least a small amount of TON to the domain within a year to extend ownership for another year. If the domain isn’t renewed, it will enter auction mode. This mechanism ensures domains aren’t lost forever if owners somehow lose access to them—for example, if they forget the seed phrase to the wallet storing the domain NFT.

Advantages of TON Domains Over Traditional Domains

Unlike traditional domain systems, blockchain domains offer several unique benefits:

  1. Decentralized control: No central authority can arbitrarily take away your domain
  2. Asset integration: Direct connection to your crypto wallets and digital assets
  3. Enhanced security: Ownership verified through blockchain technology
  4. Censorship resistance: Protection against arbitrary blocking or seizure
  5. Digital identity: A consistent identifier across the Web3 ecosystem
