The Legendary Kabosu: Legacy of the Shiba Inu That Inspired a Digital Movement
Kabosu, that famous Shiba Inu. You know the one. The face behind #Doge meme and kind of the inspiration for #Dogecoin cryptocurrency? She left us. May 24, 2024, in Japan. Lived to 18.5 years old.
She got sick. Lymphocytic leukemia, they said, about two years before she passed. Poor girl. Still, millions loved her worldwide. That expressive face - unmistakable in internet culture.
Her photo went viral somewhere in the early 2010s. Spread like wildfire. It seems her image just captured something special that resonated everywhere. Became one of those instantly recognizable internet things. Now she’s gone, but that legacy? Still very much alive. Her face lives on. Endless memes. A whole cryptocurrency movement.
Back home in Japan, Kabosu wasn’t just meme material. She was real. A cherished pet with her own popular blog - “Taking a walk with Kabosu-chan.” Not entirely clear how many followers she had, but it ranked among Japan’s top pet blogs. Pretty impressive. They even built her a public monument in her home prefecture. That’s something.
