The partner of the Hypersphere fund lost assets in six wallets due to a fake Zoom call.

The partner of the venture crypto fund Hypersphere, Mehdi Farooq (, reported that he fell victim to a phishing attack, resulting in the loss of a significant amount of personal savings. The scammers used a fake Zoom call to gain access to his device.

The attack began with a message on Telegram from an alleged acquaintance named Alex Lin, who had previously interacted with Faruk. After exchanging a link to Calendly, the interlocutor suggested moving the meeting to Zoom Business, citing the participation of an LP investor.

During the call, there was no sound, and a message appeared in the chat asking to update Zoom. After running the suggested file, the computer was hacked.

He also reported that the scammer continued the correspondence on Telegram during the attack, maintaining the illusion of normal communication. It later turned out that the real account of Alex Lin had been hijacked, and the attack was likely carried out by a group of hackers linked to North Korea.

Faruk, who previously worked at Animoca Brands, joined Hypersphere this year and was involved in transactions with liquid assets. According to him, scammers deprived him of all his funds. However, he did not disclose the amount of losses.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of rising phishing attacks targeting crypto specialists and companies in the digital asset industry. Curve Finance founder Mikhail Egorov stated that decentralized projects are facing a new wave of threats — coordinated attacks from hired hackers. According to him, the perpetrators act calculatedly and often work on order.
