The market participation of retail investors has reached a historic high:
Goldman Sachs data shows that cheap stocks (representing retail activity) accounted for 47.4% of total market trading volume on Thursday, setting a new historical high.
This exceeds the historical high of about 45.0% set in May 2024.
This is more than twice the level of the retail trading frenzy in 2020.
Interestingly, about 20% of the trading volume of stocks priced below $1.00 occurs during the pre-market trading session.
At the same time, data from JPMorgan shows that last week, retail investors accounted for about 18.5% of the options market, one of the highest levels on record.
Retail investors are still buying.
