OpenAI received $200 million to integrate AI products into the structure of the US Department of Defense

The US Department of Defense has signed a contract with OpenAI worth up to $200 million to develop artificial intelligence prototypes. According to the Pentagon, the project covers key tasks in the defense and administrative spheres. The work will take place in the District of Columbia and is expected to be completed in July 2026.

The contract is part of OpenAI for Government’s new initiative, which aims to integrate advanced AI tools into the work of government agencies. The company stressed that it will support civil servants, helping them to increase efficiency and reduce routine processes.

OpenAI plans to provide the Pentagon access to its most powerful models, including ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Gov, in secure environments. Customized solutions for national security needs and support for pilot launches are also planned.

The Pentagon expects to apply OpenAI’s developments to automate bureaucratic processes, improve military access to medicine, analyze procurement and cyber defense. All cases will comply with OpenAI’s internal AI policy and privacy requirements.

According to company representatives, the project with the Pentagon demonstrates the growing interest of government agencies in the use of AI in management. Previously, OpenAI had already collaborated with NASA, NIH, the Treasury Department, and U.S. national security laboratories, including Los Alamos and Livermore.

Earlier, OpenAI reported that its annual revenue reached $10 billion. A year ago, the comparable figure was $5.5 billion, indicating nearly a twofold increase.
