Geth's chief developer refuses $5 million and resigns, accusing the Ethereum Foundation of secretly funding competing teams.

On June 12, Péter Szilágyi, a former Ethereum Foundation researcher and chief developer of Geth, posted on social platforms this week that he rejected an offer of $5 million, which required him to spin off Geth, the core client of Ethereum, into a private company. He also accused the foundation of secretly funding a rival Geth development team. He revealed that he was fired less than 24 hours after talking to Ethereum communicator Josh Stark about the “secret second Geth team”.

According to Szilágyi, the Ethereum Foundation had threatened to cut funding for Geth and offered to give developers $5 million to operate independently. This statement is a response to the new Co-Director of the Ethereum Foundation, Tomasz K. Stańczak, who developed Nethermind, the second-largest Ethereum client. Stańczak previously denied the “plan to remove Geth” in a previous post, refuting Szilágyi’s claim that the foundation “plans to remove Geth in the next few years to focus on research and education.” Szilágyi had already announced his leave from the Foundation in November last year.
