US Cryptoreserve: Does the government of the United States have cryptocurrency reserves? In recent years, the issue of the US cryptoreserve has become increasingly relevant. Although officially the government of the United States does not declare the creation of a special fund for digital assets, large volumes of cryptocurrency periodically appear on the state's balance sheet.
The main source of the US cryptocurrency reserves is confiscated assets. The Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies seize bitcoins and other digital assets from criminals, hackers, and illegal platforms. For example, in 2022, the US government sold over 9,800 BTC confiscated in the Silk Road case.
After the confiscation, the cryptocurrency is stored in special wallets controlled by the government, and then usually sold through auctions conducted by the US Marshals Service. Despite such operations, the exact volume of crypto assets owned by the government at a certain moment remains unknown.
Thus, the United States effectively owns crypto reserves, not as an official fund, but as temporary assets obtained in the fight against cybercrime.
