The seed round raised $85 million, why is AI newcomer Sentient so valuable?

Last night, Open Source AI platform Sentient announced the completion of an $85 million funding round in seed financing. The round was led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, Pantera Capital, and Framework Ventures, with participation from Ethereal Ventures, Foresight Ventures, Robot Ventures, Symbolic Capital, Delphi Ventures, Hack VC, Arrington Capital, HashKey Capital, and Canonical Crypto.

This huge financing is particularly eye-catching in the current market, which is somewhat sluggish and silent. Moreover, the figures of Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, and Sreeram Kannan, founder and CEO of EigenLayer, have emerged in Sentient’s core think tank and contributor lineup. So how does Sentient attract so much attention and follow?

What is Sentient?

Sentient is an AI research organization dedicated to building an open, general artificial intelligence (AGI) economy. It is developing a platform and protocol that allows open source AI developers to monetize their models, data, and other innovations. Here, developers can collaborate to create powerful AI applications and become key stakeholders in the emerging open AGI economy, driving AI transformation and prosperity.

In the face of the current lack of incentive mechanisms and the difficulty of going it alone in the AI field, Sentient has proposed the “OML” (Open, Monetized, Loyalty) model concept, hoping to promote a shared and open AGI economy through the OML model, and build a shared and open AGI economic system that is jointly participated in by millions of AI agents and billions of users, providing inexhaustible power for the innovation and development of downstream applications.

Sentient strategic guidance Sandeep Nailwal (Co-founder of Polygon) said, “Sentient will be built on top of the Polygon AggLayer, rewarding engineers for tasks such as tagging and refining data, as well as other activities for training artificial intelligence models. If successful, Sentient could change the relationship between humans and AI.” Sandeep Nailwal also stated that he is a core contributor to Sentient.

In addition, Sentient will also build an unlimited collaboration and discussion platform, ensuring that the incentives and contributions of each participant are fairly recognized, and promoting the collision and fusion of innovative thinking, while enhancing the transparency and credibility of the entire system.

According to Sandeep Nailwal, the idea of Sentient came from a conversation he had with Sreeram Kannan, the founder of EigenLayer. During their discussion, they talked about how cryptocurrencies can address the decentralization and security issues of AI, as well as the role of Polygon in this structural transformation, which planted the seeds of hope for Sentient. Later, Sreeram Kannan shared this concept with Pramod Viswanath, a professor at Princeton University, and Himanshu Tyagi, a professor at the Indian Institute of Science. Coincidentally, they were working on similar things, and this research eventually evolved into Sentient.

Sentient Core Think Tank and Contributors

According to the official Sentient, the Sentient Foundation is a non-profit organization. In addition to Sandeep Nailwal, the advisory committee also includes two engineering professors and a risk studio, respectively:

  1. Forrest G. Hamrick, Engineering Professor at Princeton University, and Pramod Viswanath are in charge of research guidance.

  2. Himanshu Tyagi, engineering professor at the Indian Institute of Science, is responsible for technical guidance;

  3. Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal: responsible for strategic guidance;

  4. The risk studio Sensys, responsible for the growth of creating products and applications for Sentient, will be led by Kenzi Wang, the co-founder of Symbolic Capital.

It is worth mentioning that Pramod Viswanath, who is responsible for research and guidance, has made remarkable contributions in the field of wireless communication. During his tenure as a founding engineer at Flarion Technologies in 2020, he helped develop the framework that became the basis of 4G LTE wireless networks. Pramod Viswanath also co-authored the textbook ‘Fundamentals of Wireless Communication’ with others and is a co-founder of the blockchain startup Kaleidscope.

The research direction of Pramod Viswanath’s laboratory is also closely related to Sentient’s future blueprint. Ben, who co-taught with Professor Pramod Viswanath at Princeton University, said last month that in a course, students worked in groups to build AI applications for blockchain and blockchain applications for AI. Some projects may be implemented on the Sentient platform. Ben also revealed the research directions of Pramod’s laboratory, including AI agents for smart contract generation and verification, intelligent blockchain wallets for automatic fraud detection, AI-driven blockchain browsers, on-chain and off-chain models for gas prediction, AI-driven real-world use cases, Smart DAOs and Data DAOs, as well as AI-driven low-cost cross-chain path detection.

The lineup of contributors from Sentient is also impressive, with 11 contributors listed, including 4 from the University of Washington and 4 from Princeton University, mostly researchers or professors in AI and blockchain research, computer science, etc. In addition, Sandeep Nailwal said that there are also senior personnel from Google, Deepmind, and other leading AI companies in the Sentient AI team.

Sentient Roadmap

Sentient has listed a relatively clear roadmap, which will build the Sentient AI Platform and blockchain protocol in the short to medium term, and then build new foundational models contributed by the community, open AGI supported by OML models, and launch economic incentives and monetization for AI Builders. This quarter, Sentient enters the testnet phase.

Summary

As Primitive Ventures founder Dovey Wan said, we are witnessing the convergence of several trends, such as “binary code becoming currency code,” “machine programs becoming social contract programs,” and “human language becoming programming language.” This convergence heralds the arrival of a new era, embracing the principles of decentralized power, transparency, and collective ownership. Pantera Capital partner Franklin Bi further stated, “Open systems will surpass closed systems, allowing Open AI to defeat OpenAI.”

The grand vision of ‘ensuring that AI benefits all humanity’ held by Sentient is not a dispute confined to existing AI solutions, but rather an attempt to pave the way for the next generation of AI intelligence. Of course, the implementation path and operation mode are still to be refined in detail, but every attempt is an exploration and practice of future possibilities.
