The origin of Labor Day

May Day, also known as International Labor Day or International Labor Day, International Demonstrations Day, is set on May 1 every year. It is a festival shared by working people all over the world.

The origins of May Day can be traced back to the 1886 Chicago workers' strike in the United States, when workers staged a large-scale strike to demand an eight-hour workday, which ended in victory. In order to commemorate this great workers' movement, the Congress of Delegates of the Second International held in Paris decided to designate May 1 as International Workers' Day every year, calling on the working class all over the world to hold rallies, marches and other celebrations on this day to fight for better working conditions and rights.

In China, the earliest May Day celebrations can be traced back to 1918, when some revolutionary intellectuals distributed leaflets introducing May Day to the masses in Shanghai, Suzhou and other places. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the State Council of the Central People's Government officially designated May 1 as the statutory Labor Day in December 1949, with a national holiday.
