BYD officially took over the project in 2020. It completed train adaptation and system optimization around the existing beam structure, helping the project progress smoothly and take root. Li Tie said: “We are truly proud to be able to help the official opening of São Paulo’s Line 17. This is not only BYD’s first overseas rail transit project, but also an important practice by BYD to serve local city transportation development with innovative technology.”

São Paulo State Governor Tarcísio de Freitas said that during the project’s advancement, there was a need for a company that could provide mature solutions, and BYD, backed by its technical strength, took on this task. The Cloud Rail trains it delivered demonstrate advanced levels in communication, signaling, comfort, and safety.

The Cloud Rail trains on São Paulo’s Line 17 use BYD’s dedicated Cloud Rail batteries. They combine advantages such as automated operation, green and low noise, safety, and high efficiency. Given the complex project construction conditions and harsh operating scenarios such as the excessively high beam surfaces and large gradients left over from the early stages, BYD carried out targeted technical breakthroughs. This enables the system to safely and stably operate around the clock, providing safety functions including turnaround from any position, regional intrusion protection, and interval rescue evacuation. The successful application of this series of technical solutions is not only another important breakthrough for BYD in the Brazilian market, but also provides a new practical example for the global green upgrade of urban transportation.
