Have you ever heard people talk about hopium in crypto groups? Today I want to understand what hopium really is, because I see this term appearing quite often on forums.
Actually, what hopium is quite simple — it’s a combination of the words hope and opium (drug). This term originated from online communities and is used to mock excessive hope or baseless optimism. In other words, it’s when someone believes in something without real evidence.
In the crypto world, what is hopium when applied to investing? It describes investors who have unfounded expectations about their investments. You’ll see many examples — such as someone believing that a dead coin can still moon, or predicting Bitcoin will reach 100k without any factual basis. That’s hopium.
I’ve also come across the term copium, and at first I was confused. But after researching, I found they are different. Copium is used when someone tries to cope with a bad situation — it relates to mechanisms of dealing. Hopium, on the other hand, is about unfounded hope, with nothing to hide behind.
So, what is hopium essentially? It’s a negative trait because it’s used to mock people with unrealistic hopes. When someone says “you’re using hopium,” they’re implying that you’re blind to reality.
I see many examples online like “a little hopium for the losers” or “hope for all of us,” or even “BTC 100k #hopium.” That’s how the crypto community uses this term daily. Understanding what hopium is will help you recognize when you’re fooling yourself and when you have a truly reasonable investment strategy.
