After diplomatic coordination between Thailand and Iran, Thai oil tankers safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
A Thai official and a large oil company that operates the tanker said on Wednesday that after diplomatic coordination between Thailand and Iran, a Thai-flagged tanker had safely transited the Strait of Hormuz and was granted passage without paying any fees.
After Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow successfully held talks with the Iranian ambassador to Thailand, the Mankhal Petroleum (Bangchak) tanker transited the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
“I asked whether, if Thai vessels need to pass through the strait, they could help ensure safe passage?” Sihasak said to reporters late Tuesday. “The other side replied that they would handle it properly and asked us to provide the names of the vessels transiting.”
Sihasak said another Thai vessel, which is owned by SCG Chemicals, is also awaiting approval to pass through the strait.
In a statement, Bangchak said that its vessels have been anchored in the Persian Gulf since March 11 and are currently on their way back to Thailand. The company thanked Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Iranian authorities for their coordination efforts.
The company and a source from Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs both said that the matter involved no payment of any kind.
Media reports on Tuesday said Iran had informed the UN Security Council and the International Maritime Organization that as long as they coordinate with Iranian authorities, “non-hostile vessels” may pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
A source from Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that to ensure Bangchak’s tanker could pass smoothly, the Thai embassy in Muscat also cooperated with Oman’s authorities and coordinated with Iran through Iran’s embassy in Bangkok. Because the matter involves sensitive issues, the source asked not to be named.
The Iranian embassy in Thailand posted on the X platform that the passage of the Thai vessel reflects the close relationship between the two countries. “Friends have a place in our hearts.”
