OpenAI appoints JioStar CEO in India to lead its Asian expansion
OpenAI has appointed the CEO of India’s JioStar, to lead the company’s Asia-Pacific business, in its latest move to expand its footprint in a rapidly growing market.
Kiran Mani will officially take on this newly created role in June, reporting to OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the appointment. Mani will lead the regional strategy and will relocate to Singapore for the purpose.
JioStar is a $8.5 billion joint venture between India’s Reliance Industries and Disney, operating one of the largest streaming platforms in India.
The move comes as the ChatGPT developer looks to expand its operations in a region where adoption of its tools has surged, including among enterprise users.
The company has been increasing its investment in India to meet growing demand for its services in OpenAI’s second-largest market (by weekly user numbers). As of February, India has more than 100 million ChatGPT users each week.
Last month, India’s Tata Group partnered with OpenAI to build AI services tailored to specific industries, and help global enterprises integrate the platform of this AI startup. The companies also plan to develop AI data centers.
Later this year, OpenAI plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru. The company currently has an office in New Delhi.
Before serving as JioStar’s CEO, Mani previously held multiple leadership roles at IBM, Microsoft, and Google.
