Been doing some research on safe places to live in Mexico lately, and honestly the options are way better than most people realize. Everyone talks about the safety concerns, but if you actually dig into the data, there are solid cities where you can live comfortably without constantly looking over your shoulder.

I went through the Mexico Peace Index crime data and ranked cities by their safety scores. What's interesting is that the safest places to live in Mexico aren't always the ones you hear about first. Take Ciudad Madero, Tampico, and Altamira in Tamaulipas—these three consistently rank at the top with the lowest overall crime metrics. The safety scores hover around 0.86-0.87, which is significantly better than some of the more touristy spots.

Let me break down what I found. In Ciudad Madero, you're looking at roughly 700 USD monthly per person without rent, or around 1,727 USD for a family of four. Food runs 282-737 USD depending on household size. Similar story in Tampico—about 716 USD per person, with food costs around 301 USD monthly. These safe places to live in Mexico offer that rare combo of affordability plus actual security.

Now if you want something with more infrastructure and expat community, Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta show up. Both score around 1.01 on safety metrics. In Guadalajara, a family of four budgets roughly 2,457 USD monthly (excluding rent), with utilities around 49 USD. Puerto Vallarta runs slightly higher at 2,310 USD for four people, but it's got that beach lifestyle appeal. A 3-bedroom apartment in Puerto Vallarta center goes for about 2,065 USD.

Merida in Yucatan is another standout. Safety score of 1.01, and it's got this cultural vibe that attracts a lot of digital nomads. House rentals range from 600-2,000 USD monthly, or you can buy for around 185,063 USD average. Food costs about 300 USD per person monthly.

If you're budget-conscious, Aguascalientes is wild. 1-bedroom apartment for 280 USD, 3-bedroom for 580 USD. Homes average 53,300 USD. Food per person runs 206 USD. Safety score sits at 1.12, which isn't the absolute best but still solid.

The interesting pattern I noticed: the safest places to live in Mexico tend to be smaller or mid-sized cities rather than the major tourist hubs. Mazatlan, Puebla, Ocotlán—they all have safety scores under 1.22 with significantly lower costs than you'd expect. Mazatlan averages 2,246 USD monthly for a family of four with rent. Puebla even cheaper.

Obviously these numbers are from a few years back, so factor in inflation. But the ranking and relative safety profiles should still hold. The key takeaway: if you're serious about relocating to Mexico, there genuinely are safe places to live in Mexico where your money stretches far and the security situation is actually manageable. Just do your homework before committing to any city.
