I recently came across a global wealth ranking of writers and realized that writing books might be more profitable than we thought. Usually, when we mention the wealthy, we think of entrepreneurs or investors, but some famous authors have already reached astonishing levels of wealth.

The most eye-catching on the list is British author J.K. Rowling, who became the world's first author with a net worth of over $1 billion thanks to the Harry Potter series. This achievement truly demonstrates the commercial value of a good story—over 600 million copies of the Harry Potter series have been sold, translated into 84 languages, and the movies and merchandise have created a huge business ecosystem.

Following closely is American author James Patterson, with a net worth of $800 million. This guy has written more than 140 novels since 1976, with sales exceeding 425 million copies. His production speed is indeed astonishing. There's also cartoonist Jim Davis, with a net worth of $800 million; his Garfield series has been syndicated since 1978, and decades of ongoing income have put him among the wealthy.

Interestingly, this list includes both pure literary authors and cartoonists and business writers. For example, Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons) and Grant Cardone (business book author) have each accumulated $600 million through success in their respective fields. Meanwhile, American romance novelist Danielle Steel, who has written over 180 works with sales exceeding 800 million copies, also has a net worth of $600 million.

From John Grisham’s legal thrillers to Stephen King’s horror novels and Paulo Coelho’s inspirational works, these authors share a common trait: they’ve found ways to continuously attract readers and monetize through royalties, film adaptations, merchandise, and other channels. It’s said that Grisham alone earns between $50 million and $80 million annually from book and movie royalties.

This list is quite inspiring—it shows the long-term value of content creation. A good work can generate income for decades, and J.K. Rowling’s wealth accumulation is the best proof of that.
