Nine departments propose that by 2028, the scale of the core Internet of Things industry will surpass 3.5 trillion yuan.
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 31—(Reporters Tang Shining and Zhou Yuan) It was learned on March 31 that nine departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, jointly issued the “Action Plan for Promoting Innovative Development of the Internet of Things Industry (2026–2028),” recently. By 2028, the plan calls for the development and revision of more than 50 advanced and applicable standards, cultivating and building application areas with 35k-level connections and 15 million-level connections, and striving to reach a scale of one hundred billion internet-of-things terminal connections. The scale of the core internet-of-things industry is expected to surpass 3.5 trillion yuan.
Based on sensing technologies, the Internet of Things enables pervasive intelligent connectivity among people, machines, and objects through communication networks, bridging the digital world and the physical world. The IoT industry mainly consists of sensing, networks, platforms, applications, and security support.
The action plan clearly states that it will advance innovative development of the IoT industry through five major measures: promoting innovation and upgrading of IoT devices, enhancing the service effectiveness of IoT platforms, cultivating IoT application scenarios, strengthening the networking foundation for the IoT, and fostering an ecosystem for IoT industry development. This will further accelerate the full integration of IoT technologies into production, consumption, and social governance across all fields, promote deep integration between the digital economy and the real economy, and help develop new-quality productive forces.
The action plan also proposes that by 2028, new IoT technologies, new products, and new business models will continue to emerge, the industry’s innovation capability will keep strengthening, breakthroughs will be made in key technologies such as sensing, networking and communications, data processing, and security, and the level of intelligence in terminals and platforms will be significantly improved.
