Looking back at 2015, that was quite a year for the stock market. After Alibaba's monster IPO in 2014, people were hungry for the next big thing, and we actually got several companies that had their IPO in 2015 that turned some serious heads. I remember watching a few of these debuts pretty closely. Fitbit was probably the one everyone talked about most. The wearable fitness tracker company absolutely crushed it on day one, jumping nearly 50% from the $20 opening price. That was wild to see unfold. By comparison, Blue Buffalo, the pet food company, had a solid 36% pop on its first day with a $20 price tag as well. Both of these companies that had their IPO in 2015 raised over $700 million each, which was pretty massive. Then there were the energy plays. Tallgrass Energy ended up being the biggest money raiser of the year, pulling in $1.2 billion on day one, though the stock barely budged with just a 9.5% gain. Columbia Pipeline Partners was similar - solid capital raise at over $1 billion but pretty muted returns after that opening day. Univar, the chemical distributor, rounded out the top five companies that had their IPO in 2015, and honestly, most of these stocks that had their IPO in 2015 turned out to be pretty volatile after those first few weeks. What's interesting is how many of these companies that had their IPO in 2015 either soared or fizzled depending on market conditions. Fitbit stayed relatively strong for a while, but the energy companies? They got hit pretty hard once the market shifted. Anyway, 2015 was definitely a memorable year for IPO watchers.
