Iran terminates direct diplomatic relations with the United States, while Pakistan continues to mediate. Trump says that if negotiations make progress, he will consider changing the strike.
The final deadline set by U.S. President Trump for 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the 7th is getting closer. Reports show that Iran is no longer communicating directly with the United States, but a mediator led by Pakistan is still working behind the scenes. Trump first threatened that “the entire civilization” of Iran would perish, and then said that if there is progress in the negotiations, the strike plan could be changed.
According to CCTV News, citing a message from the U.S. on Tuesday the 7th, Iran has ended direct diplomatic contacts with the United States. Officials in the Middle East said that even so, Iran’s talks with the ceasefire mediation parties are still ongoing. CCTV said three senior Iranian officials stated that Iran has informed Pakistan that it will no longer participate in meetings aimed at a ceasefire.
According to reports, Iran told the mediator, Pakistan, that it would no longer move forward with ceasefire talks with the United States. After the news broke, the decline in U.S. stocks widened, and crude oil prices rose further. The Nasdaq 100 Index widened its drop to 1.5%, the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.55%, and the S&P 500 Index widened its drop again to 1.1%. WTI crude oil’s intraday gain reached 4.5%, to $117.48 per barrel.
After that, according to CCTV, a message from Pakistan said that Pakistan’s mediation in the U.S.-Iran talks is continuing, and that the coming few hours are “crucial”; Iran said that the channels for diplomatic and indirect dialogue with the United States have not been shut.
Also according to CCTV, Trump said that the “action at 8:00 p.m. on the 7th” will still take place, and that the “unprecedented strikes” against Iran may still be carried out, but if there is progress in talks that day, he does not rule out changing the decision.
It is reported that Iran’s cutting off direct communication aims to express dissatisfaction
U.S. media, citing statements from some Middle East officials, said that given President Trump’s threat to destroy Iran’s “entire civilization,” Iran has cut off direct communication channels with the United States. Even though talks with the ceasefire mediators are still continuing.
The officials said that this move has temporarily added uncertainty to efforts to reach an agreement before the final deadline of Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. set by Trump, but it has not led to a breakdown of the talks.
One of the officials noted that Iran’s decision to cut off communication is intended to send a signal of dissatisfaction and resistance. It is still unclear whether the two sides can restore direct dialogue before the deadline. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Pakistan sources say no substantive compromise has yet emerged
According to CCTV News, two Pakistani news sources said that mediation in talks between the United States and Iran is still ongoing, with Pakistan, as the main intermediary, passing along proposals from both sides, but no substantive compromise has yet appeared.
The sources said that Iran has recently launched attacks on industrial facilities related to Saudi and U.S. companies, which could seriously affect the progress of the talks. A senior Pakistani security official said that if Saudi Arabia retaliates, the talks could be halted, and Pakistan could even be drawn into the conflict due to its defense agreement with Saudi Arabia.
Another source said that the coming few hours are “crucial” for the outlook of the negotiations. On the one hand, Iran has shown flexibility in being willing to engage in dialogue; on the other hand, it still insists on tough preconditions. Pakistan is urging Iran to return to talks without conditions.
