On the 27th, local time, German Chancellor Merz said in a speech that what the United States is doing now is not de-escalation or seeking a peaceful solution, but a large-scale escalation of the conflict, and the outcome is hard to predict. Merz said that these escalations have already become a threat—not only to those directly affected, but also to everyone, including people in Germany. Merz also questioned the war aims of the United States and Israel in Iran, saying he believes that the goals the United States and Israel want to achieve in Iran—namely regime change—cannot be realized. Merz said, “Is regime change really their goal? If that’s the case, I don’t think they’ll be able to achieve it. Things like this usually end in failure.” In his speech, Merz also said that Germany is willing, after the war ends, to deploy armed forces to the Strait of Hormuz to carry out mine-clearing operations.
