Jimmy Donaldson's story is one of those tales that shows how obsession can turn into an empire. The guy was born in 1998 in Kansas to a military family, and then the family kept moving. After his mother divorced his father, she took Jimmy and his older brother to Greenville, North Carolina. He attended a small private school with a religious focus, but essentially his entire world revolved around one idea.
People from Donaldson's circle describe him as someone completely absorbed in his goal. In 2012, he created the channel MrBeast6000 and started uploading Minecraft and Call of Duty gameplay videos — the same thing PewDiePie was doing at the time. But here’s the difference: while other YouTubers just played, Jimmy Donaldson began obsessively studying platform algorithms. Five years of his life — waking up, ordering food, then sitting in front of the computer all day, analyzing every aspect. Classmates thought he was autistic. His own mother disapproved of this hobby — she only found out about it from her son's graduation album.
Donaldson enrolled in college at his mother’s request, but he didn’t attend a single class and dropped out after the first semester. The result: his mom kicked him out of the house. But Jimmy didn’t give up.
The first truly viral moment came in 2017 — five years after creating the channel. The 18-year-old decided to implement an insanely simple idea: count aloud to 100,000. He sat in front of the camera for over 40 hours, counting, and at the end said, “What am I doing with my life?” The video titled “I Counted to 100,000” became a hit — over 27 million views. During this time, Donaldson gained a million subscribers.
After that, the real rise began. The channel’s signature is challenges that seem pointless but grab attention. First, cups stacked into walls, then the world’s most expensive fireworks, huge Lego towers, uninhabited islands. Every month, one or two videos are released, each gathering at least 10 million views. Advertising revenue covers even the craziest expenses for executing his ideas. Jimmy Donaldson’s story is about how complete focus on one goal can change everything.
