US media: Trump says he is "deeply negotiating" with Iran and was once close to holding direct talks

ME News update, April 6 (UTC+8). During a phone interview, U.S. President Trump said the U.S. is conducting “in-depth negotiations” with Iran and could reach an agreement before Tuesday’s deadline. “The chances of reaching an agreement are high, but if they don’t, I will destroy everything there,” he said. When asked whether he is concerned about harming innocent civilians, Trump said he believes Iranian people who oppose their own government would support such strikes to weaken the regime. In an approximately 8-minute phone interview, Trump said that his envoys, Wittekov and Kushner, are engaged in intensive negotiations with Iran. Two people familiar with the talks said communication takes place both through intermediaries such as Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey, and through text messages between Trump advisers and Iran’s foreign minister, Aragchi. “The negotiations are going well, but dealing with the Iranian people will never be able to reach the finish line,” Trump said. He also said that just a few days ago, both sides were once close to reaching an agreement to hold direct talks. “But they said they would meet again in five days. I asked, why five days? I think they weren’t serious enough. So I attacked the bridge,” Trump said. (Source: PANews)
