Trump: At least 93% of the news about me is negative. Blame the White House spokesperson for doing such a poor job. Should we fire her?
According to a comprehensive report by Reference News on April 1, U.S. President Trump said, “93% of the reports about me are negative propaganda.” Some people say it is 97%—it’s probably somewhere between 93% and 97%. If someone’s 97% is all negative, then maybe Caroline (the White House spokesperson) is doing too badly. Should we keep her? I think we should keep her.
Also, according to a prior report by Xinhua Net, Trump previously directly snapped at the media at a press conference, naming and scolding the entire U.S. mainstream media—from print media to television. He also posted on Twitter, saying the media are “enemies of the American people.” This is the peak of his hostility toward and criticism of the media since he ran for president—so much so that it can be described as a full-scale declaration of war against the media.
On November 18, 2025, when Trump met with the visiting Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed at the White House, he also launched a fierce public attack on a female reporter from the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), calling her “terrible,” and said her news organization’s license should be revoked.
That day, ABC reporter Mary Brooks asked Trump questions about issues including the release of Epstein case files and the business dealings between the Trump family enterprises and the Saudi side. Trump cut her off, scolding her questions as “vicious, rude, and terrible,” and said he was disgusted by the “attitude” of the reporter’s questioning. Afterwards, Trump also attacked the news organization, saying that “ABC’s (reports) are fake news,” and that it is “one of the worst media outlets in the industry.” Trump also threatened to revoke ABC’s license.
However, negative news is not entirely bad for Trump. Public reporting shows that in May 2023, as more and more negative news was attached to former U.S. President Trump, his legal troubles became increasingly serious. On May 9, 2023, local time, a New York court jury found that Trump was guilty of sexual abuse and defamation against the female writer Carol in the 1990s. Previously, Trump had been charged with 34 felony counts for paying a hush payment to a porn star. In addition, “sword-like” issues hanging over Trump’s head—such as the classified documents incident at Mar-a-Lago and the “Capitol Hill riot” incident—are also all looming over him. On that day, the website of The Washington Examiner cited the results of a latest poll, saying that despite being mired in lawsuits, Trump’s support among Republicans has actually risen sharply at present. The U.S. news website Axios believes that Trump may have a built-in “backlash effect”—things that seem like they would make him “feel really hurt” instead make him stronger.
