Reports indicate that the Apple MacBook Neo is only equipped with 8GB of RAM due to design limitations of the A18 Pro chip.
IT之家 March 5 news: Apple released a budget MacBook Neo model last night, and the device offers only one option: 8GB of RAM. In response, the foreign media outlet wccftech believes this is because the A18 Pro chip included in the device has design limitations.
Specifically, Apple’s A18 Pro chip uses TSMC’s InFO-POP (Integrated Fan-Out Package on Package) packaging technology. This technology allows DRAM memory to be directly stacked on top of the chip package, forming a single packaging structure with the SoC. At present, all A18 Pro chips are matched with 8GB of RAM. If Apple were to heavily modify the corresponding chip design to introduce 12GB of RAM, it would generate a large amount of cost.
However, in fact, Apple could directly use an A19 Pro with a built-in 12GB RAM memory package for this model. But doing so would cause the MacBook Neo’s material costs to rise even more significantly. Especially amid the current memory chip price surge, it would be difficult to control the MacBook Neo’s relatively lower pricing. Therefore, Apple ultimately chose for the MacBook Neo an 8GB RAM configuration that cannot be selected or upgraded.
