I just reviewed the most epic NFT sales records in history, and there's something that catches my attention. The question of what is truly the most expensive NFT in the world is not as simple as it seems.

Most people think it's a one-of-a-kind piece, but Pak's The Merge completely broke that mold. It sold for $91.8 million in December 2021, but here’s the interesting part: it wasn't purchased by a single collector. Nearly 29,000 people bought different portions, paying $575 each. The concept is brilliant—people bought 'fractions' that combined into a larger work. That's why some question whether it should carry the title of the most expensive NFT in the world in the traditional sense.

What came next was equally wild. Beeple with his 'Everydays: The First 5000 Days' reached $69 million at Christie's. It started as a piece valued at just $100, but the hype around Beeple in the crypto space caused the bids to skyrocket. It’s a collage of 5,000 individual pieces created over 5,000 consecutive days since 2007. Vignesh Sundaresan, known as MetaKovan, was the one who purchased it using 42,000 ETH.

Then there's 'The Clock,' another creation by Pak in collaboration with Julian Assange. Here, things get political. It’s a stopwatch recording Assange’s days in detention, updating automatically each day. AssangeDAO, a group of over 100,000 supporters, bought it for $52.7 million. The money was allocated to legal defense. This is a perfect example of how NFTs transcend traditional art and become tools for activism.

Beeple didn't fall behind and presented 'Human One,' a 16K kinetic sculpture that operates 24/7. It measures nearly 2 meters, showing a character in a silver suit in a constantly changing dystopian landscape. The fascinating part is that Beeple can update it remotely, turning it into a living artwork. It sold for $29 million at Christie's in November 2021.

Now, if we talk about the most expensive NFT in terms of complete collections, Axie Infinity leads with $4.27 billion in total volume, followed by Bored Ape Yacht Club with $3.16 billion. But in individual sales, CryptoPunks have consistently been brutal.

CryptoPunk #5822, one of the nine existing Alien Punks, sold for $23 million. Deepak.eth, CEO of Chain, was the buyer. CryptoPunks were created in 2017 on Ethereum, initially free, and now some fetch astronomical figures. The #7804 llegó a 16,42 millones hace poco, el #3100 sold for $16.03 million. The rarity of these avatars is what drives prices up.

TPunk #3442 is interesting because Justin Sun bought it for 120 million TRX (about $10.5 million at the time). It’s known as 'The Jester' because of its resemblance to the Batman villain. It’s the most expensive ever sold on the Tron blockchain.

What surprises me is how XCOPY sold 'Right-click and Save As Guy' for $7 million. It was a joke about how people believe NFTs can be downloaded with a right-click. It was created in 2018 and initially sold for 1 ETH (about $90). Cozomo de' Medici, one of the most prestigious collectors, was the buyer.

Ringers #109 by Dmitri Cherniak sold for $6.93 million, making it the most expensive on Art Blocks. It’s part of a generative art series based on 'strings and nails.'

Crossroad by Beeple, a 10-second short about the 2020 elections, sold for $6.6 million on Nifty Gateway. It was revolutionary at the time because such a price in February 2021 was almost unthinkable for an NFT.

What I observe is that the most expensive NFT in the world depends heavily on the context. If it’s by individual sale, The Merge remains the record. If by collection, Axie Infinity dominates. But most importantly, these prices reflect something deeper: the intersection of art, technology, community, and in some cases, political activism.

The NFT market has evolved tremendously since 2017. Today, while some NFTs from established collections like CryptoPunks or BAYC maintain prices in the thousands or millions, many others are practically valueless. It’s estimated that 95% of NFTs have minimal value. The total market capitalization is around $2.6 billion at the start of 2026.

What’s interesting is that although volatility is extreme and the market remains speculative, some NFTs continue to break records. The artist’s reputation, the uniqueness of the work, and current trends play crucial roles. Pak and Beeple have shown that digital art can reach valuations comparable to masterpieces of traditional art.

If someone asks me what the most expensive NFT in the world is right now, I would say that The Merge by Pak remains the historical benchmark, but the market continues to evolve, and we will probably see new records in the coming months.
