The capacity of the Bitcoin Lightning Network reaches a new all-time high
ChainCatcher news, according to Cointelegraph, as major crypto exchanges have widely adopted it and continuously optimized its features, the Bitcoin Layer 2 network—Lightning Network—has reached a historical high in capacity.
Bitcoin Visuals data shows that the Lightning Network capacity is at 5,606 BTC, breaking the record set in March 2023. Analytics platform Amboss also reported that the Lightning Network capacity reached its peak at 5,637 BTC, worth approximately $490 million. The data show that after a year of capacity decline, in November and December the Lightning Network capacity surged, because more bitcoin was added to the network, making transactions faster and costs lower.
Currently, there are 14,940 Lightning Network nodes, down from the peak of 20,700 nodes in March 2022; while the number of channels between nodes is 48,678, also below the 2022 peak. The data indicate that the amount of bitcoin added to the Lightning Network is increasing, but usage measured by the number of nodes and channels does not necessarily grow correspondingly.
