The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Balham Salih, said on the 25th local time that the fighting in Iran has had a “far-reaching impact” on civilians in the region, posing a “serious humanitarian challenge.” Salih said that the situation is “extremely grave” at present; about 600,000 to 1,000,000 households in Iran have already been affected by the conflict, while in Lebanon more than 1 million people have been displaced. He warned that the ongoing fighting is further exacerbating instability in the region, saying, “the region cannot withstand a repeated cycle of violence,” and stressed that the most urgent need right now is to achieve peace. He also said that the current displacement of people is mainly taking place within the region, and there has been no large-scale cross-border migration so far, but as the conflict escalates there is a risk that the situation could further worsen.
