Tianqi Lithium and the "Lithium Battery Capital" Grow Together

  • □Sichuan Daily full-media reporter Yuan Min, Kan Yingying

As a leading company in Suining’s “lithium battery capital,” how will Tianqi Lithium Industry pursue a new “lithium” vision in the “15th Five-Year Plan period”? Recently, Jiang Chenghu, general manager of Suining Tianqi Lithium Co., Ltd., accepted an interview with reporters.

Reporter: How should you respond to the deep adjustments in the lithium battery industry in recent years?

Jiang Chenghu: The high-quality development of the lithium battery industry is not only about resources themselves, but more importantly about long-term support for supply-chain resilience, stable raw materials, and coordinated alignment across the industrial chain. We continue to focus on production expansion and capacity increase goals. Our overseas lithium spodumene mining projects have seen their capacity steadily improve. At the same time, all six major production bases, including those in Shehong and Anju, have implemented process improvements to further reduce production costs and enhance production efficiency.

To avoid disorderly competition of “low quality and low price,” Tianqi Lithium Industry is actively transforming and upgrading from a “lithium resource supplier” to a “provider of new materials solutions.” At the same time, by continuously optimizing production processes, we maintain leading lithium carbonate quality within the industry, and we integrate carbon management into the entire process. In the future, we will also better seize opportunities for the development of next-generation battery materials and the new energy industry, focusing on application areas such as electric vehicles, energy storage, electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL), drones, humanoid robots, and more.

Reporter: What’s your view of the current development trend of Suining’s lithium battery industry?

Jiang Chenghu: Step by step from Suining, Tianqi Lithium Industry and the local lithium battery industry have achieved mutual success and grown together. At present, Suining’s lithium battery industry is developing steadily for the better, with advantages continuing to stand out. Suining keeps polishing its business card as a “lithium battery capital,” attracting a number of high-quality companies with industry influence. The completeness of the industrial chain and the competitiveness of its cluster continue to rise, and it has become an important pillar in Sichuan and even in China’s overall lithium battery industry landscape.

As a new energy materials company centered on lithium, Tianqi Lithium Industry will continue to rely on research and development innovation and process optimization as key initiatives, continuously improving product quality and production efficiency. At the same time, the company will also build on Suining’s solid industrial foundation and comprehensive advantages to better serve the long-term stable and sustainable development of the new energy industrial chain.

Reporter: How do you view the impact of new technologies on the lithium battery industry?

Jiang Chenghu: At present, the core logic of global competition in the lithium battery industry is shifting from “resource volume competition” to “competition in high-standard lithium products.” Based on this judgment, we have made continuous investments in three areas. First, we are building a high-level R&D platform. Tianqi Lithium Industry’s innovation research institute was officially put into operation last year, to accelerate the conversion of frontier technologies into industrial applications. Second, we are increasing R&D efforts in key materials for solid-state batteries. The solid-state battery core material—lithium sulfide—developed independently was released in November last year. The material has already begun application testing, and a pilot line with an annual output of 50 tons is actively being advanced. Third, we are building a collaborative innovation ecosystem. We cooperate with universities such as Sichuan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and University of Science and Technology Beijing, and we sign strategic cooperation agreements with leading downstream enterprises. This forms a “company + universities + industrial chain” coordination mechanism, opening up a fast track from the laboratory to industrialization.
