I've noticed that in the crypto community, beginners are increasingly falling into the same trap. Let's understand what a pump is and how this scheme works in practice.
The essence is simple: scammers pick a little-known coin, quietly buy it in large volumes, then start hyping it up on social media and chat groups. They spread rumors about its potential, pretending it's the next big project. The crowd sees the price movement, begins to FOMO buy, demand increases, and the price soars. When it reaches the peak, insiders dump everything they've bought, taking their profit. The price crashes, and other investors lose money.
What is a pump in technical terms? It’s artificially inflating the price through false information and volume manipulation. Then comes the dump—a sharp sell-off. A classic scheme.
How to recognize manipulation? The first sign is the price jumps without any visible reason. No news, no updates, yet the coin suddenly skyrockets. The second sign is trading volume sharply increasing along with the price. The third is a wave of advice on social media from unknown accounts claiming this is the next 100x.
I always look at the fundamentals: does the project have a real team, a roadmap, practical use? If it’s just an empty coin without meaning, and people are urging to buy immediately to not miss out—that’s a red flag.
How to protect yourself? First, research before investing. Study the project, its history, the people behind it. Second, don’t believe promises of quick riches—legitimate investments are based on analysis, not hype. Third, diversify your portfolio. Don’t put all your money into one coin, especially if it shows signs of manipulation.
Trade on reputable exchanges that monitor suspicious activity. Keep up with news in the crypto space, study regulatory developments. The more information you have, the harder it is to fall for scammers.
In the end, a pump is a real threat in the crypto market, but it’s easy to recognize if you don’t rush and think with your head. Vigilance and common sense are the best protection against such schemes. Trade responsibly.
