Just noticed Google rolled out AI search in Yoruba and Hausa for Nigerian users. Pretty cool move honestly. They're basically letting people search and get AI summaries directly in their native language through the Google app. Like you can just type or speak your question in Yoruba now and get answers back in the same language. Nigeria has over 500 languages but Hausa and Yoruba are huge - combined they cover nearly half the country's population. So this actually makes sense for accessibility. Google says they're now supporting 13 African languages total with these AI features, including Kiswahili, Wolof, Amharic and others. The whole thing is part of their bigger plan to make AI tools actually useful for African users instead of just English-centric. They even built this open-source speech database called WAXAL with African universities to help with voice recognition. I think the real impact here is removing that friction for people who'd rather interact with tech in their mother tongue. Information access shouldn't require you to be fluent in English. Curious to see if other African countries push for similar language support now.
