Sony recently announced the WF-1000XM6 true wireless noise-canceling earbuds, and this time the evolution seems quite comprehensive. I noticed that the new earbuds have undergone significant design changes, shifting from the previous triangular shape to an oval form. At first glance, the size appears larger, but Sony has actually reduced the contact area with the ear by 11%, making it fit more snugly and comfortably for long-term wear. The charging case has also changed from an asymmetrical design to a minimalist oval cylinder, which also supports wireless charging.
More notably, the noise-canceling system has been upgraded. The WF-1000XM6 increases the number of microphones from 3 per side to 4, with a total of 8 microphones on both sides for internal and external noise sampling. The outer side features a dual-microphone design, theoretically allowing for more comprehensive external sound pickup. Paired with the new QN3e noise-canceling chip, this processor not only offers better performance but also functions as a DAC for Bluetooth signal conversion and amplification. The antenna area has doubled, combined with advanced algorithms to reduce dead spots, resulting in more stable connections in complex environments.
Interestingly, Sony has put considerable effort into tuning the sound. They collaborated with several renowned mastering engineers from famous recording studios, including Eiji Sano, who was involved in tuning Sony’s flagship wired noise-canceling headphones, the IER-Z1R. The tuning style of the WF-1000XM6 is expected to be similar to the WH-1000XM6, based on monitoring styles used in European and American pop music recordings, aiming to reproduce studio-grade sound. The 8.4mm drivers are the same size as the previous generation, but with a different edge design. Coupled with the processing power of the QN3e chip, Sony emphasizes that the sound quality will be clearer, richer, and more immersive.
In terms of specifications, each earbud weighs 6.5 grams and has an IPX4 water resistance rating. When noise canceling is activated, playback lasts up to 8 hours; without noise canceling, up to 12 hours. With the charging case, total playback time can reach up to 12 hours. A 5-minute charge provides about 1 hour of use, and it also supports an automatic power management feature that stops charging to extend battery life.
The WF-1000XM6 is priced at $329 USD in the United States. Taiwan pricing and release date are yet to be announced, but Sony has already opened experience stations at their flagship stores across Taiwan. Additionally, Sony has introduced the new Rose Gray color for the WH-1000XM6, now offering a total of four color options. This upgrade clearly shows Sony’s dedication to true wireless noise-canceling earbuds, with noticeable improvements in design, noise cancellation, and sound tuning.
