I recently traveled on the Interoceanic Train, and honestly, the experience was quite interesting. It all started because my friend Olivia kept talking about Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and she recommended I try this train. I knew it existed but had never seriously considered taking it.

The route I took was Coatzacoalcos to Salina Cruz, which only operates on Thursdays and Saturdays (although more days open in December). I bought an executive class ticket for 634 pesos. I traveled by bus from Mexico City to Coatzacoalcos (about 10 hours), arriving at 5 a.m. and boarding the train at 8. Perfect timing.

The first thing that surprises you is the spaciousness of the carriages. Reclining seats, phone chargers, luggage space. The air was freezing, so I had to put on my jacket. The bathrooms are clean and spacious, which is rare for such transportation. The disappointment was the breakfast: there was no coffee or sandwiches when the vendors passed by; the economy class passengers had finished everything. Only candies and sodas were left.

But the best part, without a doubt, was the scenery. Six hours of pure nature, passing through endless green zones, crossing La Ventosa where the winds are so fierce they flip trucks. I arrived in Salina Cruz at 2:15 p.m. The interoceanic train experience isn’t something I would do every month, but it was worth it once. If you plan to travel comfortably and want something different, this route isn’t bad. Although if you’re in economy class, bring your own snacks, haha.
