I just read that there will be a total solar eclipse in August, and it's already quite close. On August 12th exactly, and the crazy part is that it will be the first one visible in its entirety in Europe since 1999, so almost no one has witnessed it. The shadow passes through Russia, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, but here in Spain it's special because it occurs near the end of the path, just as the Sun is setting. Galicia will see it first, starting in A Coruña around 19:31, and from the northern half and the Balearic Islands, the totality is fully visible. In the south, it will only be partial. What surprised me is that the totality band measures 15,000 kilometers long but only 150 kilometers wide, so you have to be in the exact spot. These total eclipses happen somewhere on the planet every 18 months, but seeing one is rare because the geometry is very precise. They say that if you observe from a place without obstacles facing west, you get a better view, and on top of that, it occurs just before the Perseids, so you can combine both astronomical events. Today, an eclipse is on any astronomer's calendar, so if you're interested in this kind of thing, August will be important.
