Just realized a lot of people are confused about updating their SASSA banking details, especially for the SRD grant. Let me break this down because the process is actually different depending on which grant you're on.
If you're getting a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you literally have to go to the SASSA office in person. No shortcuts. You'll need your ID, a recent bank statement (not older than 3 months), and they'll fill out a form. The whole thing takes up to 21 days to process, so don't expect it to happen overnight. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next cycle.
But here's the thing - if you're on the SRD R370 grant, you can actually change your banking details online through their portal. Way easier. You just enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your account info. Just remember it has to be in your name only - no joint accounts or anything sketchy.
For your phone number, same deal: permanent grants need an office visit, but SRD lets you do it online through their contact details page. You'll get an OTP to verify it's actually your new number.
One more thing - there are fake websites out there trying to scam people with grant updates. Only use the official SASSA portal or call their helpline (0800 60 10) if you're unsure. Not worth the risk.
Has anyone else had issues with the verification taking longer than expected?
