Just realized a lot of people are confused about updating their SASSA application banking details and contact info, so let me break down what actually works. The whole process depends on which grant you're getting, and honestly, it's pretty different between the two.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you basically can't change your banking details online—frustrating, I know. You have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and a bank statement (less than 3 months old) showing the account in your name. Fill out the Payment Method Change Form, and they'll send it to the bank for verification. This takes up to 21 working days, so if you need it sorted for next month's payment, submit before the 15th of the current month or you'll miss the deadline.
Now, if you're getting the SRD R370 grant, it's way smoother. You can actually change your banking details online through the official SASSA SRD portal. They'll text you a verification link to your registered number, you click it, enter your new bank account info, and you're done. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify. Just remember—the account has to be in your name, not a joint or third-party one. SASSA won't pay into anything else.
For updating your phone number, permanent grant holders need to call the helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit an office. But SRD users can do it online through the contact portal—enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, and they'll send you an OTP to confirm. Easy enough if you remember your Application ID.
One thing: watch out for fake SASSA websites claiming to help you change details. Always use the official portal or call the real helpline. It's worth the extra step to protect your info. If the online portal gives you trouble, honestly, just go to the office or call—sometimes that's faster anyway.
