Indian Prime Minister Modi spoke by phone with U.S. President Trump on Tuesday, discussing the situation in the Middle East, including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and flowing.

This was the first call between the leaders of India and the U.S. since Feb. 28, when the United States and Israel carried out a coordinated attack on Iran.

“India supports the early de-escalation of the situation and the restoration of peace. Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, safe, and navigable is essential for the entire world,” Modi said on social media.

The conflict has disrupted multiple sectors, from air travel to seaborne shipping and natural gas supplies, including a situation in which the Strait of Hormuz was nearly shut—this strait serves as a passageway for India’s 40% crude oil imports.

Speaking in parliament on Monday, Modi said that the crisis posed unprecedented challenges for India, but he added that the fundamentals of India’s economy are sound, and that it has ample reserves of oil, fertilizer, and coal to cope with interruptions in trade and energy supply.
