Spring has recently equinoxed, and I actually looked into how long spring really lasts. It turns out to be exactly about three months, 92 days and 17 hours to be precise. Here in the United States, it started on Friday, March 20th at 10:46 AM Eastern Time, which is when the Sun crosses the celestial equator.
The interesting thing is that the length of spring depends on whether the astronomical year is 365 days and 6 hours, but our Gregorian calendar only counts 365 days. That’s why every four years we add an extra day, and the equinox shifts slightly. So spring doesn’t always start on the same day; it can be March 19, 20, or 21 depending on the year.
During these months that spring lasts, everything turns green again, temperatures rise, and days get longer. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s when we start spending more time outside, plants bloom, and animals wake up. Everything comes back to life after winter. It ends on June 20th, and summer begins, so we are in the middle of the transition.
