Just found out that updating your SASSA details isn't as straightforward as you'd think, especially if you're on a permanent grant. So here's what I learned after asking around.
If you're getting a regular grant like old age or disability, you can't just change your banking details online. You actually have to go to the SASSA office in person, fill out the Payment Method Change Form, and bring your ID plus proof of your new bank account (a bank statement from the last three months works). They then send it to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 working days. The trick is submitting before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next cycle.
For the cellphone number, it's similar. You need to visit the office or call their helpline at 0800 60 10 11 to formally notify them. Some changes can happen over the phone, but they might still ask you to come in.
Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier because everything is online. You just go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS. From there, you can update your bank account and cellphone number directly. The whole thing is electronic, which is actually convenient for changing cellphone number for srd grant since everything moves fast.
One important thing: whatever account you're updating to, it has to be in your name only. No joint accounts or anything like that. And if you're using the cash send option, your phone number needs to be registered properly.
Also, watch out for fake websites trying to trick you into changing your details. Always use the official SASSA links. If the online process gives you trouble, just call them or visit your local office. The helpline is pretty responsive from what I've heard.
