On January 7, U.S. President Trump instructed the U.S. government to withdraw from 66 international organizations and treaties. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) are both included. This move clearly demonstrates the United States’ position of departing from an international cooperation framework based on multilateralism.

The Trump administration had just recently disregarded international law and carried out a military operation against Venezuela, a South American country, to secure oil supplies, signaling a clear shift in policy direction toward pursuing “building order with strength.”

On January 7, Trump signed a memorandum directing government departments to initiate procedures to withdraw from 31 UN bodies and related treaties, as well as 35 other international institutions.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun and the Financial Times merged in November 2015 to become part of the same media group. An alliance between two newspapers—both founded in the 19th century as well—of Japan and the United Kingdom is moving forward with collaboration across a wide range of areas such as joint special reports, under the banner of “high-quality, the strongest economic journalism.” This time, as part of that effort, there is an exchange of articles between the Chinese websites of the two newspapers.
