Tesla (U.S.: TSLA) China regional general manager Kong Yanshuang reportedly moved over to join Xiaomi (01810) and will take over work in charge of the auto sales side from the former Xiaomi Motors director, Li Xiaorui. According to reports from local media, Kong Yanshuang started work in early March and is currently in a handover period; Xiaomi has not yet issued an official notice internally regarding her formal position.

Kong Yanshuang is a core executive in Tesla’s China region. She has previously held posts such as Tesla China’s South China regional general manager and regional general manager for China, among others, and has long led Tesla’s sales system planning and brand promotion in the region.

In addition, the report cites a source saying that around the same time as Kong Yanshuang joined Xiaomi, another employee with a Tesla background—named “Eason”—also joined, and it was said that “Eason” serves as the “political commissar” of Xiaomi Motors and also belongs to Xiaomi’s staff/think tank department.

Xiaomi Group’s staff/think tank department is a core unit that assists the CEO in formulating and overseeing the group’s development strategy. Insiders say it is extremely rare for a new employee to join Xiaomi directly into the staff/think tank department, reflecting the employee’s “high value” as well as Xiaomi’s determination to strengthen its current automobile retail capabilities.

The report said that some employees in Xiaomi Motors stated that Xiaomi Motors’ retail system, even at the initial planning stage, was set up by referencing the Tesla model. Currently, across the provincial companies, among the general and area managers, a considerable proportion of personnel have Tesla backgrounds. They believe that the recent joining of multiple Tesla-related executives will, without a doubt, further integrate Xiaomi Motors’ retail system and play a better role in driving growth in overall retail capabilities.
