Recently, many people have been asking me about what P&L means in trading, so I want to explain it in the simplest way possible.

So, here it is: P&L stands for Profit and Loss. In Indonesian, it’s keuntungan dan kerugian. In crypto exchanges, this is basically a tool to see how much money you’ve gained or lost from your trading transactions. Simply put, P&L is the difference between the price when you buy and the price when you sell.

For example, you buy 0.1 BTC at $40,000. That means you spend $4,000. Then you sell it at $42,000, so you receive $4,200. The difference is $200 (before fees). After deducting exchange fees, your P&L becomes around $198. That’s an example of a positive P&L.

But if you sell at a lower price than you bought, your P&L will be negative. For instance, buy at $40,000 but sell at $35,000, which means you lose money. That’s the basic concept.

The formula is very simple: Selling price minus purchase price, then multiplied by the amount of assets you sold, minus fees. The result can be positive or negative depending on whether your transaction is profitable or not.

Now, there are also terms you need to know. There’s unrealized P&L, which is the profit or loss that hasn’t been realized yet because your position is still open. Then there’s realized P&L, which is the profit or loss that has been realized after you close your position.

For beginners, just imagine you’re selling coffee. You buy coffee for 50,000 IDR, then sell it to someone else for 70,000 IDR. The difference of 20,000 IDR is your positive P&L. But if you sell it for 40,000 IDR, you lose 10,000 IDR, which is a negative P&L. The concept in crypto exchanges is exactly the same, just with larger numbers and much faster price changes.

In short, P&L is an important metric to track your trading performance. By understanding this, you can start monitoring your profit and loss more effectively. Many people who get serious about crypto have tools on Gate to track their P&L in real-time, so you can see how your position is moving at any moment.
