Microsoft has recently rolled out a major upgrade in a Windows 11 developer build update, bringing a standout enhancement to the Task Manager. This update finally fills in the last missing piece of hardware monitoring, adding official real-time monitoring for neural processing units (NPUs).

As the concept of AI PCs continues to gain popularity, NPUs have become core hardware for running artificial intelligence tasks. Previously, users couldn’t easily view the runtime status of the NPU, but this upgrade makes the load on this dedicated chip transparently visible.

In the latest 26300.8142 preview build, Task Manager’s Processes, Users, and Details pages have all added an NPU column. Users can not only see the NPU’s real-time utilization, but also dig into how different programs consume dedicated memory and shared memory.

What’s more, Microsoft has further refined the monitoring dimensions: the Performance page can now fully display activity from the neural network engines built into the graphics card. That means all system run traces related to AI will be captured by Task Manager.

This evolution of Task Manager signals that the NPU has officially entered mainstream hardware performance evaluation systems. For developers and power users, this is not just an increase in data, but a foundation for precisely tuning AI application efficiency and energy consumption.

At present, the feature is mainly available to preview experience members, and a large-scale rollout will take time. It’s reasonable to expect that, as NPU monitoring becomes more widespread, future Windows systems will be rebuilt more deeply around the AI hardware ecosystem.
